Dugong Conservation

At WAVES, we are committed to protecting the threatened dugong species through a comprehensive conservation strategy. Our approach includes monitoring critical habitats and identifying the number of dugongs present in these areas to inform effective conservation measures.

By using state-of-the-art technology, such as aerial surveys and water logging equipment, we are able to accurately assess the population size and distribution of dugongs in their habitats. This information is crucial to understanding the threats facing the species and developing effective strategies for their conservation.

In collaboration with local NGO Ebiil Society in Ngarchelong, Palau, we have been working on a project to inform local policy makers of dugongs’ critical habitat areas. Through our conservation efforts, we aim to reduce the impact of human activities, such as fishing and coastal development, on dugongs and their habitats. By working closely with local communities and government agencies, we are able to promote sustainable practices and develop effective conservation plans to protect this important species.

So far, our plan has focused on positively identifying dugongs in their critical feeding areas, assessing critical habitat by aerial surveys, and analyzing water quality in order to create geospatial datasets that can then be provided to local governments for the implementation of marine protected areas.

Future efforts are ongoing, and plan to begin to identify individuals through drone imagery and underwater cameras so that we can better understand their migrations and behaviors. As we begin to better understand these patterns, we aim to get a more accurate assessment of current population demographics so that proper management can be implemented.

At WAVES, we recognize the importance of conserving dugongs and their habitats for future generations. Our team of experts is dedicated to achieving this goal through innovative research, community engagement, and effective conservation strategies. Join us in our efforts to protect these gentle marine mammals and their vital habitats.
