Revitalizing History: Decolonization Efforts in Lyons, Colorado
Our commitment to environmental and cultural integrity drives our newest initiative in Lyons, Colorado. As part of our ongoing efforts to honor and restore Indigenous histories and rights, we are embarking on a project to transform local historical narratives. This initiative focuses on a collaborative approach with the town of Lyons to address and correct the erasure of Indigenous histories on the town's official website.
In partnership with Indigenous leaders and community members, we are diligently working to rewrite the Indigenous history section at the local Redstone Museum. Our goal is to ensure that the stories presented are not only accurate but also resonate with the voices of the Indigenous peoples whose histories and legacies pervade these lands.
Furthermore, we are excited to announce the development of a new placard for Lavern Johnson Park. This placard will provide park visitors with insights into the pre-settlement Indigenous presence in the area, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich cultural landscape that predates modern development.
Through these efforts, guided by principles of knowledge sharing and inclusivity, we aim to implement a project that not only educates but also pays respect to the Indigenous communities connected to Lyons. This project is a step forward in our broader mission to integrate values-based systems, including food sovereignty and ecological conservation, with the rightful acknowledgment and inclusion of Indigenous rights.
